Guaco is native to the tropical and subtropical rainforests of Central and South America, including Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador. Brazilian Indians have an ancient tradition of using guaco for snakebites.

In 1870, a Brazilian herbal preparation called Opodeldo de Guaco was considered a "saint's remedy" to treat bronchitis, coughs, and rheumatism, and remains a popular home remedy throughout Brazil today.
